English naval rope has held fast under load, in all weather, for generations. The same strength that once secured working boats now sits comfortably in your hand. Each lead is hand-spliced the traditional way, finished with solid brass hardware and a stamped leather keeper dyed Wolfworthy red. It is not a lead to replace each season. It is one to break in, weather, and make your own through mud, rain, and a few thousand walks. Made in England.

FAQ's
Why does my lead feel stiff when it first arrives?

That's the naval rope doing exactly what it should. Hand-spliced rope of this quality starts firm and slightly rough in the hand, that's the fibres bedding in. With regular use, it loosens and softens beautifully, whilst keeping all of its original strength and grip. Give it a few weeks of proper walks and it'll feel like it was made for your hand.

What's the difference between The Boatswain and The Skipper?

The Boatswain is rope only, no collar, no buckle, the traditional way gun dog handlers work their dogs. It slips on and off in seconds. The Skipper has a brass trigger clip, so it attaches to your dog's existing collar for everyday, clip-on-and-go walking.

Should I choose Lightweight or Heavyweight?

Lightweight suits smaller, lighter dogs, and gives a more direct feel through the rope. Heavyweight suits larger dogs or dogs who pull, giving you more substance and control in the hand. Both come in at approx. 1m in length.

How long is the lead?

Approx. 1m, in both the Lightweight and Heavyweight versions.

Will the brass tarnish?

Yes, and that's part of the character. The brass ring (and trigger clip on The Skipper) will develop a deeper patina over time, marked by rain, mud, and daily miles. It won't affect strength or function.

Is the lead waterproof?

Naval rope is built to work in wet conditions, so it copes very well with rain and mud. We'd still recommend letting it air dry naturally after a proper soaking, rather than drying it on direct heat.

How do I clean it?

A wipe down with a damp cloth is usually enough. For anything more stubborn, hand wash in cold water and leave to air dry. Avoid the washing machine and tumble dryer, as heat can affect the rope and the leather keeper.

Does The Boatswain work with strong pullers?

The Boatswain is designed as a traditional slip lead, best suited to dogs with reasonably settled leash manners. For dogs who pull hard, The Skipper, attached to a well-fitted collar, generally gives you more control.

Do you sell collars to go with The Skipper?

Not currently. The Skipper's brass trigger clip is designed to attach to your dog's existing collar.

What is the leather keeper made from, and can I get it in another colour?

It's handstamped leather, dyed Wolfworthy red and finished with our custom stamp. At the moment
it's available in this colourway only.

Will the rope get thinner or wear away with use?

No, hand-spliced naval rope is built to hold its strength for years of regular use. It softens in feel, not in strength, that's the difference between naval rope and a standard everyday lead.

Is it suitable for puppies?

Yes, though we'd recommend the Lightweight version to start with, and supervising early walks as your puppy gets used to the feel of rope rather than a fabric or webbing lead.

Where is it made?

Every lead is hand-spliced and finished in England.
