What is Complete Nutrition?

Some of the terms used to describe dog food can be confusing or ambiguous. Here we look at some of this jargon and explain clearly and simply what it means.

Complete Nutrition.

Dog food comes in many different forms. Dry, wet, frozen, freeze-dried, refrigerated cooked, snacks, toppers, treats, gravies, sausages and raw. Some of these foods are meant to provide for every need of your dog, others don't and are not meant to be your dog's only source of nutrition. If the food is classed as a 'Complete Dog Food' this means you can feed it on its own and it will provide all the nutritional needs of your dog without feeding anything else at all.

Complementary Nutrition

This food is not meant to be the only source of nutrition for your dog. Fed on its own it would not provide the full nutritional needs of your dog and to do so long term would be detrimental to their health.

These foods are meant to be fed in combination with other foods. Things like treats and toppers would fall into this category but so would cuts of raw meats if fed alone, such as chicken wings. These would need to be fed alongside a combination of other foods to give your dog everything they needed.

How do I know if what I am feeding is a Complete Dog Food?

For food made in the UK to be legally labelled as 'Complete' it needs to meet the European Pet Food Industry Federation guidelines. If the standards are met the food will state on the bag that it is 'Complete'. These standards are not the same for food made in the US.
