Top 5 Dog-Friendly Walks to Enjoy This May Across the UK

Spring has sprung, and it’s the perfect time to get out and explore the countryside with your dog. Whether you're after sandy beaches, forest trails, or rolling hills, the UK has something for every pup and their person. We've rounded up five of our favourite walking spots that are not only beautiful but also dog-friendly - perfect for longer, sniff-filled strolls this May.

1. New Forest, Hampshire – South East England

With miles of heathland, shaded trails, and woodlands to roam, the New Forest is a dog-walker’s paradise. There’s plenty of opportunity for off-lead time, and the area is peppered with dog-friendly pubs and picnic spots.

🐾 Read the National Trust’s guide to visiting the New Forest with your dog for tips on access, lead rules, and dog-friendly spots.

Walk to try: Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary loop or Blackwater Arboretum Trail.
Top tip: Keep dogs on a lead near ponies and livestock.

2. Rhossili Bay, Gower Peninsula – Wales

Often listed as one of the UK’s best beaches, Rhossili Bay is a vast, open stretch of sand where dogs can run free year-round. The views are stunning, and there’s plenty of space even on sunny weekends.

🐾 Check this beach guide for access info, facilities, and seasonal dog rules.

Walk to try: Circular route along Rhossili Down for coastal views.
Top tip: Bring a ball — this is a fetch-friendly beach.

3. Loch Lomond & The Trossachs – Scotland

If you're in Scotland, it doesn't get better than this. With dramatic landscapes, lochs, and woodlands, the park is bursting with options for gentle strolls or more adventurous hikes.

🐾 Check out this dog-friendly guide from Your Dog magazine for walking tips and travel advice in the area.

Walk to try: Balloch Castle Country Park – ideal for lakeside views.
Top tip: Many trails are off-lead friendly but be mindful of wildlife zones.

4. Chatsworth Estate, Peak District – Midlands

Stunning parkland surrounds this grand estate, with well-maintained footpaths, riverside walks, and dog-friendly cafés nearby. It’s ideal for a relaxed day out with your dog.

🐾 Read Chatsworth’s official guidance on visiting with your dog to check lead requirements and access info.

Walk to try: Circular trail from the car park through the gardens and along the river.
Top tip: Dogs must be on a lead around livestock but can run free in designated areas.

5. Tynemouth Longsands, North East England

This award-winning beach is perfect for sandy zoomies and sea air. While there are some seasonal restrictions on parts of the beach, there are always dog-friendly areas available.

🐾 Check seasonal dog access and facilities at Tynemouth Longsands before you visit.

Walk to try: From Longsands to King Edward's Bay along the coast path.
Top tip: Great spot to grab a coffee and dog treat at a nearby café afterwards.

May is the perfect time for long, mindful walks, not just for physical exercise, but for enrichment and bonding too. Let your dog sniff, explore, and enjoy the extra daylight.
